It’s Library Tuesday in the River Houses, but first, we interrupt this post for an important message from the President of the United States (that would be Franklin Roosevelt) on how to cook a turkey: “Feathered game should never be plucked until just before it is eaten. Taking off the feathers dries up the meat.”
Although food and books (as material things) are best kept apart, cooking and libraries most certainly go together! On this Thanksgiving week, when food is on everyone’s mind, why not browse some amusing notes from the culinary collections of the Library of Congress (including President Roosevelt’s stern directive):
Your local library has cookbooks too — have you and your students browsed them? If yours is a Dewey-Decimal-based library (most public libraries are), the magic number is 641.5. Perhaps you’ll have a few minutes to check some out this week before the long post-turkey sleep sets in.
What delicious discoveries have you and your students made in your favorite library this Cygnus Term? 🦃
❡ Dukedoms large enough: Have you found all the local libraries in your area? There may be more than you realize, and there’s no better homeschool field trip than a field trip to a new library! The WorldCat Library Finder will help you find all the library collections near you — public and private, large and small — and the WorldCat catalog itself will help you locate the closest copy of almost any book in the world. 📖
❡ Books in the running brooks: The sidebar on the River Houses website has links to several wonderful online library collections that we like to explore. Why not sit yourself down at a large screen for a while (rather than a phone) and give them a browse. 🖥
