One of the most famous photographs in history was taken on this day, December 24th, in 1968 by ApolloΒ 8 astronaut Bill Anders in orbit around the moon. The ApolloΒ 8 mission was the first time human beings had ever left the earth and seen our planet from another world.
The image is designated AS08-14-2383, but it’s known to history as Earthrise.
