November 11th is Veterans Day in the United States, the day we honor all those who have served in the country’s armed forces. If you and your homeschool students would like to make a valuable contribution to the study of American history, consider participating in the Veterans History Project from the Library of Congress:
The Veterans History Project asks citizen-participants (like you and your students) to interview American veterans and compile their reminiscences into a permanent record for deposit in the Library of Congress. The interviewees may be family members who are veterans, or veterans living in your local community. There is a special page for teachers and students who wish to participate as interviewersΒ β the recommended student grade level is 10 and up:
Participation requires a significant commitment on the interviewer’s part: materials must be collected, interviews documented, and so on. Here’s a short video that describes the process:
If you have high-schoolers in your homeschool, participation in the Veterans History Project would be an exceptional learning opportunity for them as well as a valuable contribution to your community and to the record of American history.
