December with 31 days is the first month of Orion Term, our winter term in the River Houses. Orion Term runs from December through February. December is Holiday Music Month in the River Houses! Watch for a rich assortment of seasonal sounds (and little educational lessons) to delight both young and old all through the month.ย ๐ต
The month of December is so named because it was the tenth month (Latin decem, “ten”) of the ancient Roman calendar, which considered the spring equinox in March to be the beginning of the year. (That’s why the previous months were September, “Seventh,” October, “Eighth,” and November, “Ninth.”) You can learn more about different kinds of modern and historical calendars on pages 357โ363 in your River Houses almanac.ย ๐

December is the month of the winter solstice in the northern hemisphereย โ the astronomical beginning of winterย โ which falls this year on Thursday the 21st. (In the southern hemisphere the 21st will be the summer solstice โ the astronomical beginning of summer.) The winter solstice is the “shortest day” of the year: the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest period of darkness.ย โ๏ธ
Our Sunday states-of-the-week for December will be Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Louisiana, and our countries will run from El Salvador to Guyana.
