πŸ“š LIBRARY LESSONS: Historic Children’s Books and Primary Sources

12 May 2020 by Bob O'Hara

Click to: riverhouses.org/2020-lc-online

The Library of Congress is offering free online “office hours” for educators every Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Eastern while the Library’s buildings are closed. The two offerings this week are ideal for homeschoolers:

“May 12: Exploring the History of the Library of Congress through Primary Sources β€” You may be familiar with the buildings of the Library of Congress, or have explored the history of the Library, but how much do you know about the actual construction of the buildings? Or how the Library operated during pivotal historical moments? In this session, a history specialist, researcher, and expert in the Archives of the Library of Congress will share and discuss a selection of historical primary sources (letters, photographs, and more) that help tell the story of this national institution.

“May 14: Free Historical Children’s Books at the Library of Congress β€” Gain new insights into teaching and learning by exploring this unique online collection of historically significant children’s books published more than 100 years ago. Enjoy a conversation between an education expert and a cataloger of rare American children’s books, Jackie Coleburn. Discover classic works, lesser-known treasures, poems, illustrations, and more.“ (blogs.loc.gov)

These live sessions will include question-and-answer opportunities for viewers (that’s you!), although they do require use of a special meetings application for participation. You can get more information, as well as printable resources from many earlier sessions on a variety of topics, at the Library’s education website:

  • ➒ Online Office Hours at the Library of Congress (loc.gov/teachers)

What educational discoveries have you made in your own library (in person or online) this Leo Term? 😊

❑ Books in the running brooks: The sidebar on the River Houses website (riverhouses.org) has links to several important online library collections that we like to explore, as well as permanent links to WorldCat and the WorldCat Library Finder. Why not sit yourself down at a large screen for a while (rather than a phone) and give them a browse. 😊

❑ When in doubt, go to the library: This is one of our regular Homeschool Books & Libraries posts. Add your name to our weekly mailing list (riverhouses.org/newsletter) and get great homeschool teaching ideas delivered right to your mailbox all through the year. πŸ“š
